Knitted together

Image
Picture by Daniel Seliong The Tailor-Made Man is a powerful play and it's been awesome hearing the various accounts and reviews by people who caught it over the weekend. I didn't get the chance to watch it in its entirety but working behind-the-scenes on it brought a unique experience I never thought I'd have. I agreed to help out not because I'm amazing at theatre productions but I was there solely because Jason (JD) needed people to help with the play. Being a close friend and brother to me, I knew how much this production meant to him and decided that I would do all I could to help out. Little did I know, I would be in over my head! I joined the props and stage team where I felt my interest in crafting and designing could be put to use. I was assigned the task of designing Mr Potiphar's set and after a few weeks of trying my hand at different ideas I felt that this just wasn't for me. I wasn't in my element and was beginning to feel flaky ab...

What Makes Love True

Image
This is a really cute video from two of my favourite fashion photographers. Their individual works are really inspiring and although I don't take good pictures, their styling and ability to capture scenes and moments have really enabled me to look at things a little differently. Especially in my line of work. :) I'll perhaps share a video I worked on inspired by Garance. :D

there's nothing like the present

Image
The new year reminds me of a chemistry set. It feels like a time we get to empty out our dirty old beakers and throw its murky contents down the drain. We get fresh jars to start a new experiment and new process over as we add substance and ingredients and elements into this bottle. We fire it up again, testing its resistance and watch as chemicals react. Solutions change colour or bubble over while some pop, crackle and snap. And all the while, we write, cause a scientist always observes and takes note of each and every action and reaction they find. Every year, I write my promises for the year. What I hope to achieve at work, at home, with my family, in my relationships, for my physical health and for my spiritual well being. But this year, I figured, why write a whole page of promises I hardly keep. Good intentions but no follow-through. That's my problem!  hmmph . So this year, I only made one promise. I resolve to be present. Not like just simply living in the present a...

Music Monday: Bon Iver

Image
It's a bit of a contemplative week for me and I find myself writing more than usual. Not in my blogs but I'm trying to finish a story that I've been working on. It's been in progress for a year actually and I haven't gotten far. But this week, I'm inspired. I always need a good song or a certain picture or a phrase of sorts to get me going. Sometimes it's even a good conversation that kick starts those creative juices. This time round, I have Bon Iver to fuel me up. Go read up about the band. There's a pretty cool story of how the name came about. Bon Iver's kinda poetic to me. I discovered it a few years ago and it's my go-to band when I'm in that melancholy state. It doesn't happen as often these days. But it's a good balance of ups and downs. Right now, it's helping me write so maybe, hopefully I'll finish this piece by Christmas.  :)

Switchfoot - Restless

Image
OWh what a birthday gift! New Switchfoot video! RESTLESS I am the sea on a moonless night Calling falling, slipping tides I am the leaky, dripping pipes The endless, aching drops of light I am the raindrop falling down Always longing for the deeper ground I am the broken, breaking seas Even my blood finds ways to bleed Even the rivers ways to run  Even the rain to reach the sun Even my thirsty streams  Even in my dreams I am restless, restless, restless Looking for you I am restless I run like the ocean to find your shore Looking for you I am the thorn stuck in your side I am the one that you left behind I am the dried-up doubting eyes Looking for the well that won't run dry Running hard for the other side The world that I've always been denied Running hard for the infinite With the tears of saints and hypocrites Oh, blood of black and white and grey Oh, death in life and night in day One by one by one We let our rivers run I can hear you breathing I can feel you leading ...

the Story

Image
I've begun reading Donald Miller's A Million Miles in a Thousand Years and it's really engaging me to 're-read' and 're-write' my own stories. I first picked it up cause I've been reading his blog and really liked the way he writes. So when I saw the book on sale at the amazing Popular book fest, I knew I had to own a copy! The book basically talks about his success, failure and his life falling into a lull when along comes an opportunity to write a film based on his book about his life. While planning the narrative for the fictional character Don, he confronts the unremarkable and dull nature of his real life. Can you imagine your life being made into a movie? Would it be worth watching? Would your story be engaging/powerful/dramatic/funny/memorable? Before one can begin to write a story you'd probrably want to know what a story is. The book defines a story as, “A character who wants something and overcomes conflict to get it”. He pens his journey ...

Find a Centre

This came as a pleasant surprise in my mail box this morning. A connection made - God sent for sure. "Being spread thin is something that seems to happen more and more in the rush of daily life, running around getting things done for other people, all the little things that eat away at your time. And the big loss is not that of time, but of attention - the presence of the self to observe, experience and be aware of life. I think you must choose what is important." Find a center. A quiet space A hidey-hole behind closed doors where the outside world rages and to look at it madly boiling away this blink of an eternity with a mildly inquiring eye, and watch, that while the world is the world is the world is all you ever have you cannot own it or control it wrap it or ride it without first looking outside, and looking within, finding the sweet strange splitsecond spot in the center of the whirlwind. Don't lose yourself.

things i've learned

Image
If you're a graphic designer or in advertising, one of the first names you would have come across is Stefan Sagmeister . Owner of the design firm Sagmeister Inc. in New York City, he's known as a design God. Like seriously. After watching him on TED Talks, I've taken to writing down some of the things he has discovered over the years... Things I've learned in my life so far: helping other people helps me having guts always works out for me thinking life will be better in the future is stupid. i have to live now starting a charity is surprisingly easy being not truthful works against me everyting i do always comes back to me assuming is stifling drugs feel great in the beginning and become a drag later on over time i get used to everything and start taking for granted money does not make me happy travelling alone is helpful for a new perspective on life keeping a diary supports personal development trying to look good limits my life material luxuries are best enjoyed in...

coulda, shoulda, woulda,

At this point, we're all a little lost. But reaching back I remember what Carrie Bradshaw once said... “As we drive along this road called life, occasionally a gal will find herself a little lost. And when that happens, I guess she has to let go of the coulda, shoulda, woulda, buckle up and just keep going.”
