the dark night of the soul

Image
I try not to talk too much about my dark night moments here in this blog cause I never wanted this to turn into the rantings of a 30 year old. I've captured the rantings of my 20 year old life in the old blog and felt like this new space should be filled with fun stuff and all things wise. But this experience with dark nights seem to be a constant shadow that follows me through the various seasons of life. However you might describe it, be it a black dog, a dark night of the soul, cancer of the soul, a fog, trying to keep your head above water, numbness, or a ten tonne ball of lead in your gut, I've come to see it for what it is - a war raging in the depths of my being. Some days it's hard to live in my own skin. I often feel like the same insecure teenager, though a decade and a half has passed since then. Other days, it feels like  wave after wave of grief. It's like living in a constant shadow when all you want is a little bit of sunshine. I know I've ...

Life's little joys

“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” - CS Lewis On a particularly rough moment in my life, I sought a counselor whose one advise helped me climb out of the pit of depression. She said that I should, renew my thoughts daily. "Start with positive affirmations," she said. "It doesn't have to be big and grand, maybe just that you will have Joy today." And so I began my day with a short prayer that I would have Joy. It seemed simple enough but on days when it was hard to pull myself out of bed I thought - fake it till you make it! And so I prayed, "Fill me with Joy, Lord." And I pushed through another day. Every day I prayed for Joy, I felt tensions releasing. Another day I survived a destructing habit, was a victory which filled me with hope. The Lord's word says in Romans 12:2 "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by ...

One Word: Thrive

I watched the perfect movie to kickstart the new year. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty . The soundtrack for it felt like it was right out of my college playlist with songs by Jose Gonzales, Jack Johnson, Rogue Wave... well my playlist hasn't strayed very far but gosh, I was one excited cinema-goer. I just soooo connected with Walter Mitty's character in a way. Well sorta. I zone out. A lot. My daydreams don't happen like Walter's do but they kinda revolve around the coulda woulda shoulda scenario. Things I should have said. Things I could have done. Things I would do. should I? Could I? Thinking bout all these at once brought such a heavy feeling as I retreated on new years and this led to writing my first post of this year. I've been blogging since 2004 and boy has it been marvelous to look back and see how much I've grown. In thoughts and words and deeds. As I welcome in 2014, I think about words. Well I always think about words. But I was thinki...

Knitted together

Image
Picture by Daniel Seliong The Tailor-Made Man is a powerful play and it's been awesome hearing the various accounts and reviews by people who caught it over the weekend. I didn't get the chance to watch it in its entirety but working behind-the-scenes on it brought a unique experience I never thought I'd have. I agreed to help out not because I'm amazing at theatre productions but I was there solely because Jason (JD) needed people to help with the play. Being a close friend and brother to me, I knew how much this production meant to him and decided that I would do all I could to help out. Little did I know, I would be in over my head! I joined the props and stage team where I felt my interest in crafting and designing could be put to use. I was assigned the task of designing Mr Potiphar's set and after a few weeks of trying my hand at different ideas I felt that this just wasn't for me. I wasn't in my element and was beginning to feel flaky ab...

A Godly City

As I woke up this morning, I was excited to start the new week. I try not to give in to the Monday Blues and instead map out a wonderful week filled with work which I enjoy and fruitful time spent with loved ones.  The drive to work was horrid as usual but as I drove into town, I noticed there were more cars than usual, the jam seemed bad for a Monday morning and as I passed by the beautiful Al-Bukhary Mosque, it dawned on me that it was May 13th.  My mind began re-reading all the Facebook posts and articles I've read over the past week wondering if there was any sign of a possible unrest. What was causing this blasted jam? Was there a demonstration up ahead? I knew it was highly unlikely but one can't help but get paranoid some days.  As I slowly drove passed the Mosque, a certain calm came over me. Talking to the Big Guy, I knew that I was safe in my own land.  I tend to plot getaways and possible emergency scenarios in my head. Fastest way out of ...

So I totally missed Kimora Lee's appearance at Starhill as I was busy with a different project. I guess our interview didn't quite happen either but no worries, I was immortalised at the event by a local blogger who apparently takes horrible pictures just for the heck of it. This picture is all kinds of funny though. Gotta' love his sense of humour in all his event shots. via  http://keehuachee.blogspot.com/ Here's the original video. My hosting/directing debut. First and last I tell ya!

a little reminder

Image
Via  Shrimp Salad Circus Today I'm just reminded to plug in to the right things and focus on the things that matter. This was probably the only resolution I made this year and as we enter into March, I hope I'm living it. Being all there.

and i will praise Him

"But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me,  and through each night I sing his songs,  praying to God who gives me life." Pslam 42: 8

28

Image
Today I celebrate my 28th year of existence. It's been a somewhat contemplative year where life has taken almost every sombre moment and turned it around. It's not like I've been a shining rainbow on speed but it's left me much more appreciative of the people and things around me. Many a day, I wake up and I choose 'Happy' . If I had to choose one word to sum up the year, it would be refreshing . After 27, life sped on and turned amazing. Sure there were glitches and down days and simply awful things and memories, outgrowing of things and lots of rainy days but amazing things still happened in the year of 27. The year of 28 feels NEW .  It's like a clean slate and miles and miles of hope. Today I celebrate my last year of single-hood. It's supposed to be a milestone which I'm writing down to remember. I know it's just a number and people stop counting and stop remembering birthdays after 21 or so. But I'm honoured to be given 28. I...

Sporadic whites

From brown to black to brown to red and plum to copper to blond to silver and white... Boy do I hate growing old. Ugh.

sleepless

Image
I've never really been a good sleeper. When I was about four or five I used to wake up in the middle of the night with panic attacks. And I'd scream and scream till my mom came and got me and put me back to bed. That happened every night till one day they figured it was asthma and maybe my panic attacks were caused by me not being able to breathe. But the whole 'waking up in the middle of the night' thing never really went away. The panic attacks are minimal but I'm twenty-eight years old these sleepless nights are beginning to show.I have these dark rings and perpetual stoned look... should I start to panic? "What are the things that keep you up at night?," my friends asked but I don't really know though. All I know, is when I sleep, I dream about zombies, snakes, wedding nightmares (this one deserves a whole post of its own), murder, quests, puzzles, death, giant robots and a whole bunch of other weird adventures go on in my sleep. I know...

journey

Image
I still absolutely love http://www.gapingvoid.com/ . I sometimes wish I had stuck with advertising instead of pursuing publishing/writing. But hey, I'm glad I've dipped my hands in both. I'm sure there's still a whole bunch of things I've yet to try. Life's gonna be an incredible journey once you decide to just step out of the shade and enjoy the sunshine. Or I might just write greeting cards cause sometimes, I reach new levels of corny. heh.

Experimental Worship

Image
via www.pulsarwallpapers.com Ever since attending a design and movement class in university, I've been intrigued by the effect that music has on us and our movement. This probrably falls into Futurism but I'm not doing a study on art periods but rather seeing art as a worship form. The Futurists practiced in every medium of art, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, industrial design, interior design, theatre, film, fashion, textiles, literature, music, architecture and even gastronomy. Now who's to say that all that could not be grounds for experimental worship? Put a song on loop then start painting! Sounds simple enough, but how much of it is you being led by the music and how much of it is just you commanding an artpiece? Are we led by the atmosphere or by strong emotion? There was another class which I thoroughly enjoyed too - Rhythm and Movement. That one was particularly freeing and I learnt a lot about myself in that class. I think...

The nudge

Image
via http://anyonelsebutyou.tumblr.com/ Every so often as i sit at my desk at work, reading news reports and mommy blogs, or writing a piece for our website, i feel like i'm being nudged. Sometimes it's a wave of dizziness like the kind felt during tremors or small earthquakes and sometimes it's as if someone's just walked past me and bumped into my chair, while at other times it's like some force of unfelt and unheard wind has just knocked into me. I look up from my notebook screen and it takes a while for my eyes to adjust and see things clearly. And then i look around the office to see if anyone else felt that too. Was anyone else rudely shaken out of their routine work of designing, editing or writing. Did anyone else have their daytime reverie interrupted by unseen forces. Of course it's most-likely my imagination. My blood sugar probably dropped hence the light-headedness. Or maybe my chair has gotten a little rickkety. Well recently when 'the nudge...

paint party

We've been pretty busy over at our home which I will fondly refer to as (BK). Can't think of an appropriate abbreviation for it just yet. Bubbly Kisses? Buns in a Knot? ahh... next time.. While I'm busy making a mess, my mom's packing for her great big European escape. She was last in London when she was in her early twenties. So now at 59, she's all excited to be going back! My sister has also been busy, dipping her fingers in paint. She was recently commissioned to draw a mural at an office space. Here she is hard at work One wall almost done. And this one's a fun mural for Miss Sheena's bedroom. :D Psst: She's available for hire. Her work I mean. She can jazz up any space you want just buzz for details.

Friday loves

Image
I'm so lovin' the Editor's wishlist on Matchbook Mag . I'm having a pretty flower power week and truly appreciating Chinese-French inspired decor, like this awesome gallery on Luscious . Which reminds me, I need to flower-up my place this June! We're celebrating a whole string of weddings which might probably lead to an overload of wedding loves. :D HAPPY WEEKEND~!
